Keeping the Hours with Philippi:
A Retreat for Exploring Contentment as Spiritual Fruit
Facilitated by Maria L. Thompson, M.A.T.S.-- November 14-15,
2008
“…for I have learned to be content with whatever I have. 12I
know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have
plenty,” so wrote the Apostle Paul to a little community of
Christians in Philippi more than 2,000 years ago. His words
suggest that he considered contentment to be a state of
spiritual maturity, one in which external realities did not
define his relationships with Christ, with others, or even with
his own body. Contentment was for Paul a sign of freedom.
As we consider his idea of contentment, what relationship do we
see between it and our faith life today? Do we, like Paul,
experience it as a grace-filled sign of spiritual maturity, or
are we uncomfortable with it? As we come close to these
questions, we begin to see just how familiar we are with this
mysterious state.
Using Paul’s Letter to the Philippians and the ancient spiritual
practice of fixed-hour prayer, the November 14-15 women’s
retreat will give participants the opportunity to explore the
spirituality of contentment in relation to their own journeys of
faith. Fixed-hour prayer, also known as the Divine Office and
the Liturgy of the Hours, is one of the two oldest, known
Christian spiritual practices; the other is communion. Woven
together, Paul and this ancient prayer tradition will create and
hold a sacred space for exploring and considering contentment as
spiritual fruit.
Maria Thompson M.A.T.S. -- Is a
graduate of the Seattle University School of Theology and
Ministry, where she obtained a Masters of Arts in Transforming
Spirituality, specializing in spiritual direction. She is a
member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America faith
community, and she has strong ties with other Christian
traditions as well, including Catholic, Episcopal, and
Presbyterian. As a practicing contemplative, Maria’s spiritual
direction practice is grounded in a daily discipline of
centering prayer. Her direction style is highly intuitive,
focuses on the movement of God within the body and within
relationships, and creatively engages symbol, imagery, and
metaphor in discerning the presence of the holy. She is a member
of Spiritual Directors International (SDI), and abides by the
SDI code of ethics.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
The Prayer Shawl Ministry will get together for a
knitting/crocheting meeting on Friday, October 17th, 10:00 -
Noon in the Learning Center #1. We welcome all who can knit or
crochet to join us.
Our ministry has stitched about 140 shawls which have been given
to CLC members, friends and family who have had difficult times,
as well as times of celebration, when they need to feel God's
love surround them. We feel blessed to be a part of this
ministry and to be able to use our hands, needles and yarn to
share God's unconditional embrace and love for everyone.
We thank those who have donated yarn for the shawls. We use (3)
6 oz. skeins of washable 4 ply yarn for each shawl. Also, if
someone is interested in delivering the completed shawls to the
recipients when needed, please contact Deanna Kaasa.
If you have a person on your heart and mind that you feel needs
to be surrounded with God’s peace and love woven into a prayer
shawl, please contact Deanna Kaasa through the
church office.
