Musical Groups at Calvary

Calvary Bell Choir
Calvary has a bell choir which adds to our worship service monthly. We  practice each Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. and play in worship on the 4th Sunday each month during the school year. Dr. Jim Brown leads the Bell Choir. We welcome experienced and novice ringers, and would love to have you come and join us.

Calvary ChoirCalvary Choir
Calvary’s choir participates in worship at our 8:30 and 11:00 services in our lovely sanctuary. Whether singing from our loft or at the front of the church, the choir adds an uplifting musical component to worship at Calvary.  Dr. Jim Brown leads the Calvary Choir. If you would like to give the choir a try, come to rehearsal on Thursday nights at 7:15. In addition to a great musical experience, you will find new friends and fellowship!

Praised for his “generous tenor” by Early Music America, choral director, stage director, singer and voice teacher James L. Brown is an active proponent of both early and new music. James is the Chair of Vocal Studies at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA where he oversees a large and diverse voice program. As the director of that school’s Opera Workshop, he has been the recipient of several grants including a Regency Scholarship Grant and a Production Grant from the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music in New York, NY.

Opera News stated that “His lyricism is most appealing.” Brown has sung with such opera companies and presenters as New York City Opera, New Orleans Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Bronx Opera, Rogue Opera (Oregon), Chautauqua Opera, Seattle Early Music Guild, Skylight Opera Theatre (Milwaukee), Aspen Opera Theater and The Spoleto Festival in Spoleto, Italy. The tenor has sung roles under the baton of such well-known conductors as James Conlon, John DeMain, Richard Hickox, Julius Rudel and Robert Spano and early music directors Rinaldo Alessandrini, Arthur Haas, Andrew Lawrence King and Stephen Stubbs.
James has introduced many world premieres in the last several years, among which are: Russian composer, Vladimir Ryabav’s The Border Between Light and Darkness, Sheila Silver's The Thief of Love (recently released on DVD), Jack Beeson's The Equilibrists and Mexican/American composer Riccardo Zohn-Muldoon's Comala at the Teatro de Bellas Artes in Mexico City.

As a concert soloist, James has appeared at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Seattle’s Town Hall, Harris Concert Hall at the Aspen Festival, The Ravinia Festival in Chicago and the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California. James sang the title roles in New York State Baroque’s productions of Rameau’s Pygmalion, Handel’s Jephtha and Bach’s St. John Passion (Evangelist).
Recent performances have taken Brown back to New York for the title role in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo (Stony Brook), Boston for three Fringe Concerts at the 2007 Boston Early Music Festival, Seattle for Cavalieri’s Rappresentatione di Anima e di Corpo with the Seattle Academy of Baroque Opera, and Britten’s Serenade and Cantata Misericordium with Choral Union in Tacoma, WA (2008).

Music News from Calvary

Bell Choir Gets New BellsDedicating new bells and Communion chalices

On Sunday, February 14, we dedicated our new set of bells...a 5th Octave! This set has 7 really large "low" sounding bells and several really small "high" ones.

Choir Chairs The Calvary Choir has struggled for some time (many years actually) with uncomfortable noisy metal folding chairs in the balcony. It seems impossible to sit in one of those chairs without our wonderful acoustic picking up the sound. Sometimes we stand between the movements of our music so we don't spoil the mood with the creaking.... Well, there is a solution for this problem. We are going to buy some new chairs- great idea, eh? Here is your chance to show your appreciation to our choir in a really tangible way; write your check for a portion of the $3,000 and place it in the offering or send it to the church office. Please note it is for "choir chairs". If you wish to buy a whole chair, the cost is $100.74. Thanks for your support.

We Love Our Musicians  On behalf of the Worship & Music Team and the entire congregation, I would like to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of all our musicians. Each person involved gives of their time and their talent to enhance our worship.

Our Bell Choir practices weekly for an hour, and they play two services once a month. They arrive early to set up and be ready to play at 7:45 A.M. and stay through 11:30 to play for the 11:00 service.

Calvary Choir rehearses at least an hour and one-half per week and is in place 45 minutes before each time they sing to warm up their voices and be ready for service. On festival Sundays choir sings both services.

Deeper Life Band practices every week and finds new music to keep the worship fresh. They have a lot of set up and take down of equipment and they do this year-round.

Tony Willing is integral to all three worship services of course and is shifting gears rapidly to keep the pace of Sunday morning. He spends many hours in private rehearsal to make sure he is ready to not only lead the hymns, but accompany the voices with a wide variety of challenging music.

Jim Brown leads our choirs with energy, caring and patience. Each rehearsal is a teaching session and a sharing of his commitment to sacred music and his Christian faith. Our choirs and the music they provide are enriched by his enthusiasm and joy.

Glenn Sawyer goes about his work quietly with purpose. Not only does he make sure everyone is mic’d up for service, but that he has recording microphones in place. This means coming to choir dress rehearsal at Christmas and Easter to make sure he gets the best sound. At 7:30 on Easter morning Glenn approached choir director Jim with his first “gold record”, a masterful recording of the “Seven Last Words” that we had sung just two nights previous! Each choir member was handed a copy as well.

Thanks to each of you who shared your musical talents this year, we truly appreciate your hours of preparation and willingness to provide such a rich assortment of worship music. And thanks again to our leaders who create an environment of love and passion for our music ministry.
