Planning Team Moves Forward The Planning Team has
assembled and will be working with the Congregation to make
some defining decisions about our life together, following our
recent pastoral changes. This team is not a Call Committee,
but rather will work on formulating recommendations to give to
the Council regarding future action. The members of the team
include Mike Ragan (our Facilitator), Karin Johnson, Dave
Frost, Duane Sawyer, Shari Winslow, Tim Riddle, Kevin
Anderson, Gail Pierson, Waverly Hagen (Council President), and
Pastor Lori. They will soon be creating focus groups to gather
your feedback, but if you have anything to share now, please
feel free to contact one of the team members.

Special Congregational
Meeting On Sunday, August 15, at 10:30 a.m. The
Synod Office has informed Calvary that we need to issue a
new call to Pastor Lori Cornell as Pastor of Calvary
Lutheran Church. Because she and Pastor Chamberlain were
Co-Pastors, the church-wide organization of the ELCA needs
evidence that she is still serving as our pastor (outside of
the co-pastorate with Pastor Chamberlain). As the first step
in the call process, the Council approved extending a
full-time call to Pastor Cornell at its July 13 meeting. The
next step in the process is to have a congregational meeting
with the single agenda item of voting on the call to Pastor
Cornell. The Calvary Constitution requires that members be
notified by mail and in announcements in the bulletin on the
two prior Sundays.

Reclaiming and Blessing Ceremony
Held May 22
On March 17th our church was the
site of a violent act that took the life of Carol Parsons. Our
whole community was stunned and heartbroken. Since then,
Carol’s family and our congregation have received many kind
words, and prayers of support and comfort as we work through
the grief and sense of violation.

On Saturday, May 22, about 70 people gathered at Calvary to
reclaim the Lutheran Counseling Network site as a place of
peace and hope. We joined with others in the community to seek
to turn “swords into ploughshares” and honor and welcome our
city’s first responders, city officials, and others who
represent the hope we now reclaim publicly.

Lessons
from Geese
Team allegory
The flight of geese in a V-formation is beautiful. But it
also has some remarkable lessons that we can learn from
the flight pattern that have significance of belonging,
success, support, teamwork, and power of affirmation.
1)
As each goose flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for
others behind it. There is 71 percent more flying range in
V-formation than in flying alone.
People who share a common direction and sense of purpose
can get there more quickly.Whenever a goose flies out of formation it feels drag and
tries to get back into position.
2) It’s harder to do something alone than together. When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into
formation and another goose flies at the head.
3) Shared leadership and interdependence give us each a
chance to lead as well as an opportunity to rest. The geese flying in the rear of the formation honk to
encourage those up front to keep up their speed.
4) Encouragement is motivating. We need to make sure our
“honking” is encouraging – and not discouraging.
When a goose gets sick or wounded and falls, two geese
fall out and stay with it until it revives or dies. Then
they catch up or join another flock.
5) We may all need help from time to time. We should stand
by one another in difficult times.

VBS 2010 Together!
As God wants a relationship with us, we seek that as well. For
our Vacation Bible School week we will learn and experience what
it is to belong to God and to embrace that love and
grace --- all of us -- together.
Our theme text is Micah 6:8: "What does God require of us: that
we act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with our Lord." Each
day we use a parable to illustrate how Jesus helped the people
understand what it is to "act justly," to "love mercy," and to
"walk humbly with God." Children will have or tell their current
stories relating these values and attitudes to their lives
today.
Our belonging to God will be celebrated as a spirited team. .
God's team. Our team mascot is Wild Geese. This is very
intentional as geese model wonderful behaviors. (see "Lessons
From Geese") We will practice encouraging one another as we work
toward common goals using our unique God-given gifts. We share
leadership and help one another on God's team. Our team will be
cheering each other on in our spirit-filled lives -- together.
The adults and youth that make up our staff team will again be
incredible! Their faith shines through; their enthusiasm in life
and love of children make this week special for the students in
our church AND in the community of Federal Way. They make the
positive difference -- together.
We welcome your prayers, your passing this information to
children in the community and your support in whatever gifts you
can share. We will soon be inviting you to help provide a Bible
for our new participants. Watch for more information.
We are going to have a Bible based, fun, spirited experience
TOGETHER!
